Practice Owner – Michal Harris, DVM

Practice Owner - Michal Anne Harris, DVM

Dr. Michal Anne Harris grew up in Toledo, Ohio, where she started volunteering at a local veterinary hospital at the age of 12. During the sixth grade she nearly drove her parents nuts, because when she wasn’t dragging home every stray in the neighborhood she was begging to go to the library to write letters to veterinary colleges asking what it would take to become a vet!

She completed her undergraduate studies at Warren Wilson College. After getting married and moving to Florida in 1991, she graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. Dr. Harris was the Valedictorian of her graduating veterinary class and the winner of the Merck Award for Excellence in Internal Medicine.

Dr. Harris (we call her Dr. Mike) began working as a technician at Wells Road Vet in Orange Park in 1991. After graduation from veterinary school, she worked as the associate veterinarian there for 12 years. In May of 2008 Dr. Mike purchased that practice from her long time mentor Dr. Susan Shelton. Dr. Mike and Dr. Shelton also founded Saint Francis Animal Hospital several years ago. Saint Francis is a not-for-profit veterinary clinic with the ultimate goal of providing veterinary care to pets regardless of their owner’s ability to pay.

Dr. Mike sold her Orange Park practice in late 2014 and opened Sixth Street Veterinary Hospital in March of 2015.

Dr. Mike’s professional interests include dentistry, cancer treatment and chemotherapy, internal medicine, and critical care, although one of her favorite things is just meeting and seeing everyone’s pets.

She and her husband Dave moved to MacClenny in 2013. It was shortly after arriving here that they realized they had fallen in love with the community and were destined to open the new hospital.

The Harris’ are pretty serious auto racing fans. Dave does high-performance automotive work for a living. He owns a 1986 Buick Grand National that he uses as a show car, and his newest toy is a Super Pro car that they will run in the local racing series at Gainesville Raceway. They often travel to attend NHRA national drag racing events. Dr. Mike and Dave are also big time Jaguar fans and proud season ticket holders since 1997, so look for them at the games! Dave is a certified NRA pistol instructor, and both Dr. Mike and Dave enjoy shooting as a hobby.

Recently Dr. Mike has embraced fitness and has lost significant pounds through exercise, a fantastic personal trainer and eating right. She now religiously walks and works out daily – and enjoys shopping for clothes and boots!

The Harris family dogs are Plott Hound Gibson and Weimaraners Mo-Jo and the most recent family addition Emma. Mo-Jo, Emma and Gibby are sometimes spotted hanging out at the clinic, although they usually prefer to relax at home on the couch these days while Mom works hard at the office!
